A letter to my readers – Day 27

Posted on by Karen

I feel a bit of a fraud writing a letter to my readers… What I write here is largely for me – blogging, and writing in general, helps me clarify my thoughts as well as keep a track on our progress, both personally and educationally. It’s very much helped me change my perspective on life.

I hope though, by publishing my blog, I can change, even in some tiny way, people’s perception of high functioning autism. My own included, I hasten to add. Primarily, I would like to change the perception that autism is a condition which is comprehensively negative and needs to be ‘cured’. Respectively, it isn’t and it doesn’t.

To quote Temple Grandin:

“What would happen if the autism gene was eliminated from the gene pool? You would have a bunch of people standing around in a cave, chatting and socializing and not getting anything done.”

I agree with that sentiment completely. All innovation and progress comes when someone looks at the same world but sees something entirely differently.

So, if you are reading this, I’d like to say thankyou for stopping by. And given we are heading into April, I would like take this opportunity to say that autism acceptance costs absolutely nothing. Keep your cash and send us a smile
